George Warren who was a neighbour of Bert and Nora Hollingdale recalls: ‘They were a real village couple, who were always glad to see you, especially Bert who would generally be seen in his workshop, but he also grew all his own vegetables and enjoyed the fruits from his apple tree.

Bert and Nora left their collection of old photographs to their neighbour George Warren and we are grateful to him for donating the collection, together with photographs of his own, to the Tillington Archives.

Bert Hollingdale was born, in the nearby village of  Duncton, but in 1942, together with his wife he moved to Holly Cottage, Tillington. Bert was a carpenter with Boxall’s the local building firm, working for them for fifty years until his retirement.

In retirement with time on his hands, and inspired by the wonderful church view from his cottage, he turned his talents to making beautiful, hand crafted wooden items for local churches, particularly All Hallows, Holy Trinity Duncton and St Mary the Virgin at Upwaltham.
